Nuclear inversion is disadvantageous
Based on studies of more than 120 species, we showed that in difference to nocturnal, diurnal mammalian groups have rods with conventional nuclear architecture. Since all modern mammalian species originate from common nocturnal ancestors, this finding suggests that although inverted nuclei are fully functional, inversion is strongly disadvantageous in comparison to conventional chromatin arrangement (Solovei et al. 2009, PubMed; Joffe et al. 2014, EvolBiol; Feodorova et al. 2020, PubMed).
